The sheet metal rolling process is a metalworking operation in which metal strips pass through a set of rollers to reduce sheet thickness and achieve uniform thickness throughout the sheet. The sheet is deformed along the linear axis. Typically after the rolling, metal sheets go through annealing which is done under a closed environment of nitrogen.
Sheet metal can be formed by various manufacturing processes including bending, curling, incremental sheet forming, laser cutting, perforating, press brake forming, punching, roll forming, rolling, spinning, stamping, and water jet cutting.
Rolling is classified according to the temperature of the metal rolled. If the temperature of the metal is above its recrystallization temperature, then the process is known as hot rolling. If the temperature of the metal is below its recrystallization temperature, the process is known as cold rolling.

In terms of usage, hot rolling processes more tonnage than any other manufacturing process, and cold rolling processes the most tonnage out of all cold working processes.

What is the difference between hot and cold rolling?

Hot rolling and cold rolling are two different methods used in the process of shaping metal, and they have distinct differences:
Hot Rolling: This process involves heating the metal to above its recrystallization temperature, which is typically over 926° Celsius (1700 degrees Fahrenheit). The metal is then deformed between rollers creating thin cross sections. This process results in a refined grain size, removed blow holes, and an increase in toughness and strength. However, very thin sections (less than 1.25 mm) are not usually obtained by hot rolling.

Cold Rolling: In contrast, cold rolling involves passing the metal through rollers at temperatures below its recrystallization temperature. This process increases the yield strength and hardness of the metal by introducing defects into the crystal structure of the metal, creating a hardened microstructure which prevents further slip. Cold rolling can also reduce the grain size of the metal resulting in Hall-Petch Hardening. Very thin sections (0.02 mm) can be made as in case of aluminium foils.
In summary, the main difference between hot and cold rolling lies in the temperature at which the rolling process is carried out and the resulting properties of the metal. Hot rolling is done at high temperatures and results in a more malleable metal, while cold rolling is done at room temperature and results in a harder and stronger metal.
